Augsburg Confession & CFW Walther Law and Gospel  | Classroom A/B

One of the foundations of Lutheranism is its approach to two separate and distinct doctrines in understanding Scripture:

  • Law and Gospel. The Law shows us what we cannot achieve, and what Jesus achieved perfectly. The Gospel shows the love of God poured out through His Son’s sacrifice to bring about Salvation; once again, something that we cannot do on our own. Dr. CFW Walther, the first President of the LCMS, authored the book, The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel. This course will review all of Walther’s 25 thesis on the use of law and gospel, as outlined in his text.
  • In addition, the Augsburg Confession will be studied. Written by Philipp Melanchthon, the Confession was presented to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, at the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530. Desiring to restore political and religious unity in the German Free Territories, Charles V had called upon the princes of the territories to explain their religious convictions. The Augsburg Confession was the explanation of Martin Luther’s convictions. The Augsburg Confession is part of the Lutheran Confessions and answers many questions that define Lutheranism.
